“I was lucky enough to spend a full day birdwatching near Nevado del Ruiz, on the Manizales side, with Paola as our guide. From the very first moment, I was amazed by her ornithological knowledge. She recognized the vast majority of bird songs with incredible ease, identified the species instantly, and shared anecdotes about them. She also knows the Nevado del Ruiz area perfectly, so we were able to make the most of our time in the field. “The birding throughout was excellent, but even during moments when it wasn’t very active, we still had interesting conversations about birds, plants, nature, the cuisine of Colombia and life in general. [By the way, the local brand of coffee that you recommended from a supermarket, was the best coffee that I brought back from Colombia, too. Thank you! ] Furthermore, I greatly appreciate your patience with my efforts to speak Spanish as a second language.
My highlights that we saw together were the Green Jay at Lodge Kairi Natural Reserve, the Streak-headed Antbird near the Río Blanco Ecolodge, and the two speciality hummingbirds: the endemic Buffy Helmetcrest near the entrance to Parque Nacional Los Nevado and the Rainbow-bearded Thornbill seen at the grounds of the Hotel Termales Del Ruiz. Two plants that deserve honorable mention were “Siete Cueros” (Andesanthus lepidotus of the family Melastomataceae) and “Frailejones” of the Páramo (Espeletia spp. also known as ‘Big Monks’, in the family Asteraceae).
In addition, you went out of your way to assist me with a variety of special requests from arranging suitable transport once it become clear that my initial driver was unfit for the job, to no pork at lunch (but great soups), the purchasing of a memory card in the city of Manizales, and most importantly, assisting me on my last day when there was a significant delay with my airport pickup.
Overall, I was most pleased to have you accompany me during an amazing trip to Colombia and can recommend you as a birding and nature guide in the Manizales area to anyone without hesitation–I will gladly serve as a reference for you”.
“La observación de aves fue excelente en todo momento, pero incluso en los momentos en que no había mucha actividad, seguimos teniendo conversaciones interesantes sobre aves, plantas, la naturaleza, la gastronomía colombiana y la vida en general. Además, te esforzaste por ayudarme con una variedad de peticiones especiales, desde organizar un transporte adecuado una vez que quedó claro que mi conductor inicial no era apto para el trabajo, hasta asegurarte de que no hubiera carne de cerdo en el almuerzo (pero sí excelentes sopas), la compra de una tarjeta de memoria en la ciudad de Manizales y, lo más importante, apoyarme en mi último día cuando hubo un retraso significativo en mi traslado al aeropuerto.
En general, me encantó que me acompañaras durante un viaje increíble a Colombia y puedo recomendarte sin dudarlo a cualquiera como guía de observación de aves y de la naturaleza en la zona de Manizales; con mucho gusto serviré como referencia para ti”.
